We all used lead weights of various shapes and sizes of sea fishing and many do not know yet, just use for them simply to all back issues from the noose and Tackle Box is made. This is a big mistake, why not increase your chances of catching on. This article takes you on some basic aspects and usage and to improve the catch rate go!
Drawings
Starting from the fundamental "Beach Bomb Lead", or as a lead bulb known. FishingThe weight is considered by many fishermen, is used quite aerodynamic and smooth and has several purposes. most common use is to stick on the end of a series of springs in the summer! This style also has the great advantage that is not in possession of land or grasp. When bottom fishing rig ledger base from a pier or beach can lead to one, this leads to one of the best coverage of the earth. Land cover, with the help of non-communication under static bait on the ocean floor while you wait for the fishPass! Changing your bait to the sea along the bead is inside the sandbox or training that can not see you move down, this is where the fish hold terminal, generally because their deposits in which food and snacks easy to order by underwater currents or characteristics.
Grip Classic Lead is the opposite of a bomb on the beach, because it handles with wires that dig into the seabed. There are several variants of the "Lead Grip" They have standards, Long Tail, Short Tail, long thread, Softyand Breakout but they all do the same job. These are great when you want to hold ground especially when there is a strong tide and you want to pin your bait down next to a feature or stop your rig getting dragged into a snag! A good size for a grip lead would be 3-4oz however when I went on a fishing week in the Isle of Scilly even a 7oz+ lead won’t hold the bottom there due to vast amounts of water pushing through the islands, so remember to take a good selection of weights with you, especially if you have never fished the venue before.
Watch Lead or Clock Leads. It’s the lead weight you get with a crab line when you were a child, yes they are used for crab lines however they are fantastic leads for anglers that like to target Flatfish. For Estuary fishing and Beach fishing this lead is a good choice to use as it is a fairly flat lead and partially grips the sea bed with its lead bumps. The bumps provide just enough resistance to guide your rig on the bottom but also to stir up the sandy seabed attracting curious bottom dwelling fish. With this lead design you will have more control than the Beach Bomb method however it won’t cover the ground as quickly which can be an advantage and a disadvantage depending on your methods. Also there are leads that are very close to the watch leads in their uses. These are the Breakaway Flattie Leads with built in Impact Bait Clips, Coffin Leads and Star Leads which look like a medieval club.
Egg Leads, Bullet Leads, Ball Leads! Most anglers refer to them as Float Leads; it’s a simple weight with a drilled center, they can be used as said before with Sea Floats but also they are very handy for extra weight when lure fishing by placing them behind a trace line or they can be used for basic ledgering for Wrasse when you just need that little extra weight. I always have a selection of egg leads ranging from 1-3oz which covers most needs when I’m out fishing new marks “very handy”. The great advantage with these is they are probably the cheapest lead weight on the market so if you lose some it’s not a problem!
Thinking outside the lead box!
Here are some useful tips for lead weights that I have picked up over the years and recently.
Paint the leads
That’s right paint the leads a colour of your choice with a can of spray! Some angler’s recon that painting the lead acts like an attractor or lure which they believe helps the fish locate the bait. A method that is defiantly worth trying out.
Soft baits at range
There is a lead design which some of you may have already used or have heard of, it’s the new “Dvice”, a hook bait delivery capsule with the lead built in. This is becoming a popular choice for anglers around the UK. We sell them here at Monster Fishing under Rig Components or the Lead Weight Section.
Dipping
Some anglers dip there lead weights in Rag worm or Lug worm oils that you can get on the market as a attractant and then place the weights in the freezer, they repeat the process until they have built up two or three layers of frozen oil around the lead. Bit like dipping a candle. Then they place their lead weights into a thermos flask to take to the venue. The idea is that when the lead is cast out with your rig attached of course, the oil defrosts under your rig thus releasing the oily scent trail which fish lock onto to locate your bait quicker. Maybe worth a try!
Conclusion
Next time you walk into you tackle shop or purchase tackle online, take the time to think about what lead weights you really need and how they could improve your chances. Yes there are no hard and fast rules about choosing leads but each lead weight design has its own special features which can be tailored into your individual fishing style and needs.

Have you been in the tackle shop or fishing department of your local super center and seen some of the live bait rigs for sale? Many of these live bait rigs are made with wires, hooks, beads, and or very heavy line. Have you ever bought and/or tried any of these monstrosities? Hopefully not, because they are about as useful as the word ‘no’ to a sleazy salesman.
What is the goal when we use live bait for fishing, other than catching fish of course? The goal is to have our offering appear as natural as possible underwater. I’m of course referring to freshwater fishing in this article and not saltwater fishing. Saltwater fishermen have an entirely different philosophy when it comes to live bait rigs. When fishing in freshwater the goal of a live bait rig is for the bait itself to look as much like it does in nature as possible.
For example we want our minnows to look like a slightly wounded minnow, not a minnow impaled on a large hook. When it comes worms, we want our worm to look like a worm and not some sort of worm ball. The same principles hold true for any live bait that we choose to use.
In my experience the best ways to rig live bait for fishing is to keep it simple. I’ve always found that fishing is very much like life, and the simplest things are often the most effective. I think Henry Wadsworth Longfellow said it best when he said, “In character, in manner, in style, in all things, the supreme excellence is simplicity.”
As I’ve said the bottom line is to make your offering appear as natural as possible, which means using gang hooks. These ingenious and simple fishing hooks are the essence of simplicity, and are some of the best live bait rigs that you will ever come across. Gang hooks are simply a pair of fairly small fishing hooks ties in tandem and attached to your line using a small barrel swivel.
If you fish with live bait and are looking for a more efficient and effective way to do it, gang hooks are your answer. Stay away for the weird and crazy contraptions in your fishing tackle store and remember what Mr. Longfellow said, because his words refer to fishing as much as anything.

If you are a keen fisherman you know how much top quality tackle costs. It is very expensive, if you want the best–and if your budget is limited it can be simply unaffordable. What are you to do then if you want some new gear but just can,t come up with the big dollars needed to buy it? A new fly reel by a top maker can cost $200 and up and a really good fly rod is in the same price league. Add a good line, leaders, a box of flies and a landing net and you can be looking at over $500. That is a lot of money by any standard. If you are an average wage earner with a home and family to keep it is probably well beyond what you can afford.
Fortunately there is a simple solution to this problem. Buy used fishing tackle and save a bundle on your outfit. Now I know that the very idea of something “used” conjures up visions, for some people, of beaten up old items that are not worth having at any price. Actually nothing could be further from the truth. Many rods, reels and lures in new or near new condition are quite easy to find and to buy at a small fraction of their new value. You do not have to go without top quality tackle because you can,t afford the new price. A $200 fishing rod or reel can quite often be bought for less than $50–sometimes a lot less. If that sounds too good to be true you are definitely not a garage sale enthusiast. Those are the places to go for great buys on used fishing tackle.
Particularly if you live in an area where there is good fishing you will find lots of good tackle for sale weekly at local garage sales. Get yourself out of bed early on Saturday mornings, get to the sales before the crowd gets there, and you will find amazing buys on used fishing tackle in many sales. Less than $100 will buy you what would cost $500 new if you shop carefully.
Be prepared to make offers to the sellers. Garage sale prices are always negotiable and the experienced buyer always makes a lower offer than the tag price. Fishing tackle boxes full of lures, flies, leaders and assorted items can often be bought for $10 to $20 with contents which would cost hundreds of dollars to buy new. In fact garage sales can be your way to get that top quality tackle which is simply not affordable at the new price. Check out your local garage sales and you will see how true this is.
